November Is Here! Are Your Books Ready for Year-End?
Charlotte Van Dyck
The holiday season is almost here, and with it comes a familiar rush of activity. Between holiday plans, employee schedule changes, customer demands, and wrapping up projects, the final weeks of the year can disappear surprisingly quickly.
For many small business owners, December also brings another challenge: getting their finances organized before the calendar turns to January.
But what if you could get ahead of that year-end scramble? Think of November as your business's financial dress rehearsal. It's your opportunity to review the numbers, address lingering issues, and make sure everything is in place before the final curtain falls on the year. A little preparation now can make a big difference in how confidently you finish the year.
1. Make Sure Your Books Are Caught Up
Before you can evaluate your business's financial performance, you need to know that your records are accurate and current.
November is a great time to make sure your bank and credit card accounts are reconciled, transactions are categorized correctly, and any unusual balances have been investigated.
Small bookkeeping issues have a way of becoming bigger headaches when they're left unresolved. An unidentified transaction from September is much easier to research now than it will be several months later. Getting your books current also means you'll have more reliable financial information for the decisions you need to make before year-end.
2. Take a Closer Look at Money Coming In and Going Out
The holidays can create unusual cash flow patterns. Some businesses experience their busiest sales season, while others see projects slow down, customer payments get delayed, or operating expenses increase.
This is why November is an ideal time to review both accounts receivable and accounts payable. Are there customers who still owe you money? Are outstanding invoices being followed up on? Do you have large vendor payments, insurance renewals, or other expenses approaching?
Consider looking ahead at the next 30 to 60 days to identify potential cash shortages before they happen.
Remember, a healthy bank balance today doesn't necessarily mean all that cash is available to spend. Understanding upcoming obligations helps you avoid unpleasant surprises during the busy holiday season.
3. Review Your Financial Performance Before the Year Is Over
By November, you have enough financial history to get a meaningful picture of how your business has performed throughout the year.
Take time to review your Profit & Loss Statement and Balance Sheet. Compare your current results with the previous year or your original budget.
Ask yourself:
- Is revenue where I expected it to be?
- Have expenses increased more than anticipated?
- Are my profit margins improving or shrinking?
- Is my business carrying more debt than it was at the beginning of the year?
- Are there any financial trends I should address before January?
The goal isn't just to see whether you made money. It's to understand why your business performed the way it did. Those insights can help you make more informed decisions about spending, staffing, pricing, and planning for the coming year.
4. Get Organized With Your CPA
While tax filing may still seem months away, November is a smart time to begin preparing.
Make sure your financial records are organized, supporting documents are accessible, and any outstanding bookkeeping questions are being addressed.
It's also a good time to communicate with your CPA about year-end tax planning, estimated payments, or other matters that may require attention before December 31.
At Team One Accounting, we work alongside our clients' CPAs to help ensure they have the accurate financial information they need. The earlier everyone has reliable numbers, the easier it becomes to identify what still needs attention before the year closes.
5. Give Next Year's Plans a Head Start
Year-end preparation isn't only about closing out the past; it's also about creating a stronger foundation for the future. Use what you've learned from this year's financial performance to begin thinking about next year's goals.
Perhaps you're considering hiring an employee, expanding a service, purchasing equipment, or improving cash flow. Understanding your current financial position helps you evaluate those opportunities realistically.
You don't need to have every detail of next year's budget finalized in November. But having a clear picture of where you stand gives you a much better starting point.
A Smoother December Starts in November
There's something reassuring about entering the holiday season knowing your finances are in good shape.
Instead of spending December chasing down missing transactions, wondering whether your books are accurate, or scrambling to answer questions for your CPA, you can focus on finishing the year strong. And perhaps more importantly, you can spend more time enjoying the season with your employees, customers, family, and friends.
At Team One Accounting, we believe good bookkeeping should make running your business easier, not add to your stress. Our team helps clients maintain accurate financial records, understand their reports, and stay prepared throughout the year, not just when tax season arrives.
Because the best year-end financial strategy isn't waiting until the last minute. It's being prepared before the rush begins.
